Today’s intention was: To feel alive, and to be thankful for that feeling.

Throughout my practice today, I tried to find meaning in this intention. What does it mean to feel alive?

The core of our survival on Earth is the ability to breathe. The simple notion of taking in oxygen and exhaling it sends warmth and calmness throughout the body, inviting clarity into the mind and pureness into the soul. Moving through practice today, I kept this intention in mind, willing myself to experience feeling alive. As I moved through the different poses, I kept my ears open for Scott’s prompting but kept my breath steady and true to my body movements. Instead of predicting what he might instruct next, I decided to stay in tuned to the moment, savouring every single inhalation and exhalation.

There are times in my life when I try to predict what would happen next. In my current situation, I’m worried about not being able to find a job and running out of finances. But there is no point in being alive if there’s constant worry for the future. We can’t foretell the future but we can only live in the present and be thankful for all that we have. I can’t predict if I would have a job in the next few months but if I’m proactive in my job hunt, and allow myself to believe that life would work itself out, I will be able to be settled in the present and focus on sending out the cover letters and resumes as opposed to asking “what if”.

To be alive and to feel alive hold different meanings for everyone. Today, I learned that to feel alive, I need to live in the present and be in tuned to my breath.
